THE BRIEF

translating a global environmental atlas into a national conversation.

The Plastic Atlas is a fact-based publication of the Heinrich Böll Foundation and Break Free From Plastic — a global reference point on the plastics crisis, published in more than twenty international editions. The Foundation's Thessaloniki office asked Kronikon to design the Greek edition, in collaboration with WWF Greece, Greenpeace Greece, and the Ecological Recycling Society. The challenge was to hold to the visual continuity of the international series, add a distinctly Greek chapter of country-level data, and produce the whole publication under a Creative Commons license so it could reach every reader without a paywall.

WHAT WE DID

01

editorial design & localization

  • Adapted the international Plastic Atlas system into a Greek-language edition while preserving the visual continuity of the wider international series.
  • Held to the atlas's disciplined grid, typography, and infographic language across every page, so a Greek reader could pick up the local edition and recognize it as part of the same body of work.
  • Rebuilt every headline, caption, and label in fluent Greek editorial voice, coordinated closely with the Foundation's editorial team and the local partner organizations.

02

cover design

  • Designed a single, silent cover image — the planet Earth wrapped in transparent plastic sheeting — that carries the atlas's central argument at a glance.
  • Produced coordinated print and web versions of the cover, matched in colorway and register.

03

Greece-specific infographics

  • Designed a bespoke set of Frames for Greece — country-level pages layered into the international content without disrupting its rhythm.
  • Translated statistics on Greek plastic use, waste management, and marine impact into legible, self-contained infographics.

04

launch campaign assets

  • Produced web-optimized versions of the atlas alongside the print production files.
  • Designed the Foundation's Facebook banner and website banner for the launch campaign, keeping the atlas visually consistent from the cover to the feed.
